Los Angeles rolls out online database of historic sites
(AP)—From towering basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain's hillside home to downtown's towering US Bank building, Los Angeles is putting all its landmarks online.
Officials gathered Tuesday on the 26th floor of City Hall, itself a historic landmark, to roll out a new website called HistoricPlacesLA.org.
It's a 15-year project of The Getty Conservation Institute and city planning officials.
The effort has surveyed about 75 percent of Los Angeles' 880,000 structures—everything from houses to office buildings to the Hollywood sign.
When it is completed next year, officials say they will have reviewed every structure in town.
Mayor Eric Garcetti says the site will not only help city officials preserve LA's landmarks but also make it easier for tourists to find them.
