So if I understand this article correctly, they simply took bunch of smaller IGBT devices and integrated them in a Cascode fashion. Parallel groups of cascoded IGBTs would probably require ballasting, but it probably does work. The only concern I have is that if/when it fails, it could actually get explosive. Of course, that would be the case with most semiconductor switches.
