"By studying data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft orbiting Saturn, the seventh planet from the Sun, they could exclude two zones, the team wrote in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics."

Read that paragraph and tell me what's wrong with it.

It would not be surprising to learn the proposed a 5-15 Earth mass planet between 200 AU to 1,200 AU from the sun does not exist, but time will tell.

If you compare Mike Brown's estimates against the detection limits of NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) space telescope, Planet 9 should already have been detected except in the most distant part of Planet 9's proposed orbit.

If this is indeed the legendary Planet X, then the search can be narrowed down considerably. It should currently be passing through,or has passed through very recently, the Pisces constellation. If they find it there, then this would be the legendary planet the ancients called Nibiru.

Okayeei, I am sort of slow on some of this stuff? What is wrong? From the picture it shows a pie slice that is probable and two pie slices that is excluded. Cassini-Skippy is the closest guy to him we got out there with instrumentation, so what is wrong?

Maybe Cassini-Skippy can figure something out by Saturn's wibble-wobbling?

Hooyeei, I am the idiot this time, eh? Saturn is the number 6 planet not the number 7. Ha and Ho!!!

Smaller telescopes may have a chance by looking for unexpected star occultations in the predicted orbit.

@ Zephir-Skippy. How you are podna? I am good like I usually am, thanks for asking. I got a question for you, not argue, but I am just curious me.

the nearing end of ignorant epoch of mainstream physics.

How could anybody who lives in this modern age with all our gadgets and doo-dads and the interweb and flying off into space and peoples living to be 90 or 88 years old and all such like,,, call this the "ignorant epoch of mainstream physics"?

I think the science and physics world is pretty marvelous and wondrous. I might not know much of the physics stuffs you know about, but I still think we live in a really remarkable "epoch of mainstream physics."

"If you compare Mike Brown's estimates against the detection limits of NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) space telescope, Planet 9 should already have been detected except in the most distant part of Planet 9's proposed orbit."

I corrected the link address and found as per Brown's estimate it would not, since PN likely is smaller than Saturn. If you want to know what WISE has eliminated, you can go to the source: http://www.findpl...age.html .

As you can see from the last graph it _may_ have eliminated a gap in between where Catalina (and PAN-STARRS et cetera) has eliminated PN out to much further distances, depending on the size of PN.

[tbctd]

[ctd]

Brown: "Sadly, [WISE] is not very sensitive to ~Neptune sized objects, which could barely be seen to Planet Nine's ~200 AU closest approach. Luhman has redone the survey using the more sensitive bands of the WISE data (but which covers a very limited part of the sky), and reports that there is still nothing there. He is still trying to understand what the limits are for a ~10 earth mass object, but we have hope that WISE would have seen Planet Nine in the section near Planet Nine's perihelion where it crosses the Milky Way. Stay tuned."

"If they find it there, then this would be the legendary planet the ancients called Nibiru."

Read that paragraph and tell me what's wrong with it.

[Tip: The planet is too far away to be a mythical 'Nibiru' visitor of the inner planet system. PN has _eliminated_ 'Nibiru', and much of the likelihood for 'Nemesis' too, removed the space where they could orbit in between passes further in/out.

Not that crackpots would notice, or care, "symptomatic for the never ending ignorant epoch of crackpot 'physics'.]

This is emergent effect similar to complementarity of black holes. Everything gets extreme today: both the success of mainstream physics, both its ignorance. The great success of mainstream theories has also lead into less than healthy belief in their universal validity.

I suppose I am just going to take your word on that one Zephir-Skippy. I got no idea what that means. That's my fault not yours,,, maybe.

Torbjorn, the chart on my broken link (sorry) was credited to Penn State University. All I very simplistically did was draw a box around a 5-15 Earth mass planet between 200 AU to 1,200 AU as Mike Brown predicted, and nearly the whole thing was in the detected zone on that chart. I can think up a bunch of reasons why this might be wrong (chart is wrong, too close to galactic plane, WISE has an incompatible temperature sensitivity, etc.). However, WISE was supposed to answer this kind of question and ruled out Saturn-sized planets within 10,000 AU so some sensitivity to Neptune-sized planets between 200 AU to 1,200 AU seems likely.

@ Zephir-Skippy. How you are Cher? I am good and here, and now you are not here again. Sorry about that Podna, but you knew it was coming, right?

Smaller telescopes may have a chance by looking for unexpected star occultations in the predicted orbit.

The planet is moving extremely slow for the star occultations to be noticeable.

Are you sure it's Zeph? Personally, I find him WAY less annoying that the prosthelytizers that come in here. Entertaining and even knowledgable.

Are you sure it's Zeph?
Oh yeah, he's ol Zeph-Skippy. Non doubt about him. (I got the super duper CIA grade NASA approved computer with the Zephir-Skippy sniffing program on him. It is good for almost all the puppet couyons you see here, and you would be shocked at some of those, or maybe you would not be so shocked at them.)

Who the new VZH-Skippy? He only make that one postum so far, give him time.

If you are talking about Zeph-Skippys in general, yeah, I am kind of fond of him too. He is entertaining, and and always talks about everything BUT him selfs and how smart he is.

Don't know bout this one, but all the others, yes.

If you are talking about Zeph-Skippys in general, yeah, I am kind of fond of him too. He is entertaining, and and always talks about everything BUT him selfs and how smart he is.

Exactly. Don't even know his "credentials", but he does seem to be aware of a lot of relevant studies.
So.... VZH, if you are Zeph - Be proud, be loud and let your freak flag fly!

"WISE . . . it could find a Neptune, if one existed, out to 700 AU."

"anything that doesn't have its own internal heat source will be too cold for WISE to detect. The objects need to be 70 to 100 Kelvin to be detectable; even another Earth, if there was such a body in the Kuiper belt, would be a frigid 35 Kelvin, too cold to spot."

"I spent nearly an hour on Tuesday with WISE principal investigator Ned Wright and project manager Bill Irace"

http://www.planet...070.html

So WISE does appear to put some constraints on the potential Planet 9. Mike Brown apparently thinks 200 AU is the limit while the WISE guys (pun intended) think it is more like 700 AU. A 10 Earth mass planet would presummably radiate less energy than a 17 Earth mass planet like Neptune, so nothing is certain just yet.

His comments have been deleted. The moderator(s) only delete very specific persons' comments. The RNA idiot from Georgia whose name I can't remember and Zeph seem to be the only two that get moderated. That would suggest that promile is Zephur. Promile- the brand- is very popular in the Czech Republic. It's also used to treat skin conditions. Would fit if Zeph had some hideous skin disease why he sits at home trolling so much.

The idiot from Georgia was JVK, he was perms banned, as was @verkle though he is back as
BartV. The bans wouldn't have happened without readers contacting the moderators repeatedly
to complain about their abuse of the comments section.

That would suggest that promile is Zephur.

Don't need to suggest anything. Zephir-Skippy never denies who he is no matter what his current name is. He always admits it and never tries to hide it. (One of his positives). Choot we been fooling around with the Zephir-Skippy for years and years and years. He has had over three dozen different names on the physorg and never denied one of them.

If you accuse somebody of being Zephir and he comes back to say he IS NOT Zephir, then it is the safe bet to believe him

You Win!

Trust me Cher, it is Zephir-Skippy.

Whydening-Skippy. That is just tip of the berg Cher. All of those he posted as much or more than promile. He has over three dozen puppets he postumed with for the last 10 or 9 years. And I am only talking about the ones used to write with, not the vote-only-puppets.

You Win!
Not so fast there Skippy. Give some other peoples a chance, there are still plenty of Zephs left,,,,,

I'm just gonna leave this here :)

Sorry guys, but I don't understand your paranoia about "Zeph". I'm new to this site and I have no idea who is Zeph, certainly I'm not him whoever he is, but your 'by-default-suspicion' makes me offended and I tend to report your comments about me.

@VZH
i wouldn't take it personal... yet

give it time and let the site see your posts and read what you have to say... your personality will *always* come out in the end

and it's not a paranoia so much as it is fatigue and maybe some anger at the lack of moderation

everyone new gets called zeph (or worse) at some point

if the above makes you offended, you may want to consider going to a moderated site like SciForums where moderation exists more than just occasionally

Thanks Captain, I'll consider that.

Why did you remove the tinfoil hat for your profile picture? I've never quite understood the basis for that. Aliens invent mind control...but aluminum foil stops them cold. Right.

Are you just trolling? How out of touch do you have to be to not know, a) Everyone has heard that before, and b) Anyone with a brain has dismissed it as wildest inanity. And NO ONE said it was Planet X. There is no Planet X. Planet X was a hypothesis based on Neptune's orbital irregularities. We've learned it doesn't have orbital irregularities, but a different mass. Pluto was found as a coincidence. QED, there is no Planet X. This is totally different.

Don't you love the way the cranks always throw in some essential little detail that just happens to be totally wrong?

It should currently be passing through,or has passed through very recently, the Pisces constellation.

Assuming its near the ecliptic- and there's no reason yet to think otherwise- do you realize how long it would take to "pass through Pisces"? We're talking hundreds of years. So, WTF does "recently" even mean in that context? Crikey, look at how long it takes Neptune to "pass through Pisces".

@spicyspace I think the two questions are related. A person that could believe that actually doesn't have the ability to know how widespread that fairy tale is, or how it's perceived.

Aliens invent mind control...but aluminum foil stops them cold. Right.

MK Ultra invented mind control!

We think we have the nominal mass and orbital parameters of Planet Nine that we call Vulcan. Forbes almost discovered it in 1880. Here are the orbital parameters.

@VZH,

Sometimes it works to be persistent in clicking the Report on the likes of Ira, Captain Stumpy, Phys 1 & a couple others. But in addition to that go to the Contact at the bottom of each page & tell Phys.Org you will use adblocking software if pariahs like these are not blocked from Commentary. If a 100 people use add blocking software, that will get Phy.Org's attention more than the Report feature.

One thing you can be sure of, the names I just posted will be quick to downvote this post with 1s, those who do this are simply a bunch of haters on a get even binge because they don't like people posting on this site who are vastly smarter & better educated than themselves.

...quick to downvote ...
@Ben-Kam
yep, but not because of why you think!

ad-block will not affect PO's bottom line any more than you not reading billboards has stopped them from being used (most competent users have some kind of adblock)

PO revenue will come from:
1- the number of posters and unique profiles (this is why you're not banhammered, b)
2- the volume of activity on the site (this AND above is why anonymizers aren't prohibited to keep out zeph, benni, etc)
3- actually clicking ON the ad
4- donations/sponsored accounts
they don't like people ...who are vastly smarter & better educated...
i prefer those types
what is NOT liked is someone who makes false claims (LIES) and can't actually support their conjecture with evidence... like your ODE comments
you can't actually do math
http://phys.org/n...ood.html

http://phys.org/n...als.html

that is EVIDENCE of your inability

One thing you can be sure of, the names I just posted will be quick to downvote this post with 1s, those who do this are simply a bunch of ,,,,,,,,

,,,,,,, who don't like me very much because I am in a select group of crankpots and trolls who earned our low karma scores the the old fashion way,,, by being stupid and trollish.

There is one I can agree with Bennie-Skippy. Now don't you got some different equating to do?

those who do this are simply a bunch of haters on a get even binge because they don't like people posting on this site who are vastly smarter & better educated than themselves.

And THAT comment is exactly why they don't.

Now I feel sorry for the conflict developed far beyond the initial (bad) joke...

"US astronomers announced last month they may have found a ninth planet ..." No, they didn't. This is simply false. They announced that they have analyzed the orbits of the outer planets and some large Kuiper Belt objects and can explain some of the questions about them by postulating a large-ish planet (relative to Earth, tiny compared to Jupiter) on a highly elliptical orbit thousands of AU larger than any of the inner or (other) outer planets. Science journalism is about explaining the technical for the general reader, it's rotten journalism to so distort it as to make it completely misleading. Epic Fail.
- Ogg
That's why it says, ".....they MAY have found a ninth planet...". Not that they did find one.

Captain Stumpy's ideal
...what is NOT liked is someone who makes false claims (LIES) and can't actually support their conjecture...
Well unless they emotionally influence others through sporadic facile humour ?

Is this a universal Captain Stumpy ? is it true that *anyone* who makes false claims and goes further to LIE in unwarranted personal attacks should be "..NOT liked" ?

Is there an exception Captain Stumpy, that its ok to make False claims, Lie & Bully if they are your personal intimate friends ?

Have you heard of the term being "consistent", have you heard of the cliche' "evil wins when good men do nothing" ie Pathetic ?

Other than idle usefulness of Uncle Ira showing all how NOT to behave on public forum re:-

- Confusing claim with evidence
- Making things up to pursue personal attack
- Bullying with facile humour to ingratiate & contrive acceptance

What Captain Stumpy, is Uncle Ira's "Necessary Function" here ?

Isnt Evidence key Captain Stumpy ?

I'm not sure that Eric Idle had the structure of a limerick in mind at the time. Something about improvising while being nailed to a wooden cross (simulated of course) made this lyrical effort memorable and good life advice.

He's here in Sydney with John Cleese for a live performance. Should be fun.

Perhaps for Mike, the Galaxy Song (Eric Idle) might also help and is, of course, about Astro-Sciency stuff.
