ive got a zebra on my wall - when you look at it - the stripes sort of move and you cant see the edge of the zebra...there is an effect where it sort of blends into itself...its obviously a form of camouflage

It could also be that it was a genetic mutation that doesn't have any benefit or disadvantage so it may not help, but there was no reason for it to be lost.

First, the stripes may not be effective against human vision, but humans were never the zebras primary threat, were they? Likewise, maybe the stripes aren't to confuse the predator, but to assist the zebra in separating predator elements from non-predator elements in a flight situation?

Good call, Guy ! Human peripheral vision seems honed to spot predators in partial cover...

A thought: As Big Cats etc chase motion, the zebras' vivid look may have evolved so predators are statistically distracted by safely distant herd members.

Nearest analogy might be waving a towel to distract a strayed bull...
