As an Opera user, I must say: Good decision. Hopefully, it will mean better overall compatibility. Opera is usually not designed for, and that can be really annoying. Also they'll have more time to polish the rest of the browser and innovate. Now let's just hope Microsoft will come to the same conclusion with IE.

gwrede: From a web-designer standpoint the IE is an annoyance. It takes additional effort to support it (because it just behaves differently). It's getting better over time (or rather over the versions) - don't get me wrong, but still too much effort. So competition - yes, but not exactly IE, please.
