That explains the rise in the Cormorant population on Lake Ontario. There are literally tens of thousands in large fly-by flocks on some days, and their staple is the Goby. The Cormorants are despised by sport fishermen who consider the Goby a bait fish, and are under the impression that the Cormorants' effect on Goby populations are affecting sport fish populations. All that is moot, since A) the sport fish are stocked, and B) the Gobies can be easily maintained because of their predation of the ubiquitous Zebra Mussel. The only argument that can be made against the Cormorants is that they are ruining Lake Shore habitats by killing the trees in their nesting sites with their guano.
